About GIC Filling

Glass ionomer cement, or GIC, is a tooth-coloured filling material that bonds to the tooth and releases a small amount of fluoride over time. It is gentle on the tooth and often used for areas that are hard to keep dry.

It is a good option for certain cavities near the gum line, for baby teeth and for temporary or low-stress restorations.

Benefits

  • Bonds to the tooth
  • Releases fluoride
  • Suitable for areas near the gum line
  • Gentle and quick to place

Who it suits

  • Cavities near the gum line
  • Worn-down areas at the neck of the tooth
  • Teeth where a lower-stress filling is appropriate

Safety and what to tell us

  • GIC is less hard-wearing than composite for heavy-chewing surfaces
  • Tell us about allergies and sensitivity
  • Avoid eating until the numbness wears off

What to expect

  1. Numb and clean. The area is numbed and the decay is removed.
  2. Place. The GIC is placed and allowed to set.
  3. Finish. The filling is shaped and checked against your bite.

Sessions

Usually one visit.

Downtime

None. Brief sensitivity is possible.

Aftercare

  • Avoid chewing until numbness has gone
  • Brush gently around the filling
  • Return for a check if it feels rough or loose
