About Surgical Tooth Extraction

A surgical extraction is used when a tooth cannot simply be lifted out, for example if it has broken at the gum line, has curved roots or is impacted beneath the gum, as wisdom teeth often are.

It is carried out by our dental surgeon under local anaesthetic. A small incision may be made in the gum and sometimes the tooth is sectioned to remove it safely, and we explain the plan beforehand.

Benefits

  • Treats teeth that cannot be removed simply
  • Relieves pain and infection from impacted or broken teeth
  • Carried out by a dental surgeon
  • Clear aftercare guidance

Who it suits

  • Impacted wisdom teeth
  • Teeth broken below the gum line
  • Teeth with complex roots

Safety and what to tell us

  • Tell us about blood thinners, diabetes, heart conditions, allergies and recent infections
  • X-rays are usually needed first
  • Swelling and some bruising are common and expected

What to expect

  1. Plan. We review the X-ray and explain the approach and risks.
  2. Surgery. After numbing, the tooth is removed, sometimes in sections, and the gum may be stitched.
  3. Aftercare. We explain medicines, diet and how to look after the area.

Sessions

Usually one visit, sometimes with a short follow-up to check healing or remove stitches.

Downtime

Swelling, soreness and a soft diet for several days. Plan some rest.

Aftercare

  • Use cold packs as advised and take medicines as prescribed
  • Eat soft, cool foods and avoid rinsing hard on the first day
  • Contact us for severe pain, fever, heavy bleeding or worsening swelling
